Moody Park Playscape
As one of the oldest municipal parks on the west coast, Moody Park is a place rich with activity, culture and memory. First established in 1862 the park initially provided respite from the surrounding rugged wilderness, but as the surrounding city developed the park has become a refuge for enjoying nature and recreation in the urban landscape. As early as 1922 the first playground was established in Moody Park, making it an important place for the children of New Westminster. As the city of New Westminster continues to densify, Moody Park will become increasingly important to maintain the livability of the city.
The project has followed a thorough design process involving the local children and the general public. The design features a wide range of criteria to remain engaging for children upon repeated visits. Research demonstrates that, more than ever, multi-faceted outdoor places for free play are critical to children’s health, which benefits the community as a whole. Children have a true developmental need for play spaces that challenge their physical, social, emotional and cognitive abilities.
The playscape is designed improve circulation connections, provide social spaces and preserve the mature vegetation surrounding the site. The end result will be a playscape with a sense of place that is well integrated with its surroundings.
