Prairie Winds Park has been a popular and well-loved regional destination and community gathering place for a quarter century. As the surrounding communities have grown and become more established, the park’s role has evolved and attendance has increased, resulting in new demands on its existing facilities.

Space2place undertook an extensive public engagement and design process to define a vision and develop plans, enhance Prairie Winds Park, and support a wide range of community uses in all seasons. Opportunities were identified to increase the usability of the park by layering a greater diversity of programs, increasing site connectivity, and optimizing the layout and function of existing site activities.

The resulting Design Development Plan provided a framework that guided the redevelopment and renewal of the park in the near term. Space2place led the implementation of the plan with the creation and enhancement of a number of unique features including a toboggan hill, a wading pool and lazy river, an expanded playscape, new picnic shelters, festival sites, a skating rink, an all season amenity building, and a range of outdoor sports and recreation facilities. The plan and resulting redevelopment have ensured that Prairie Winds Park will continue to be a favourite family destination in northeast Calgary for generations to come.
